What causes ear infections in pets?
A common cause of infection in cats and dogs is the excessive growth of bacteria and/or yeast. This is especially so if your pet has a weak immune system, allergies, or diabetes - yeast infections are always secondary to some underlying cause.
Ear infections can develop when the skin lining in the ear canal becomes irritated, leading to inflammation. Inflammation can lead to excess wax production, which creates an environment where the naturally occurring bacteria and yeast grow out of control. Itching occurs and your pet starts pawing and scratching at its ears, and rubbing and shaking its head.
What are the signs of an ear infection?
Other than the tell-tale signs of scratching, pawing, and rubbing the ears.
- Black, dark brown, or yellowish discharge
- Waxy buildup on or near the ear canal
- Redness or swelling of the ear flap or ear canal
- Discharge from the ear that resembles coffee grounds (a symptom of ear mites)
- Strong odor
- Hearing loss
- Loss of balance or disorientation
- Head tilting / headshaking
- Crusts or scabs on the inside of the outer ear
- Hair loss
- Crying or whimpering while scratching or rubbing ears
Preventing Ear Infections
Check your pet’s ears regularly for signs of infection, especially if your breed’s ear conformation (such as Persians or dogs with pendulous ears) is disposed to infection. Read ‘Breeds Prone to Ear Infections’ to find out more. Cleaning daily helps remove wax buildup, dirt, and debris. Using Eye Envy Ear Cleaning Solution will also help prevent ear infections by managing bacteria and yeast growth.
